Around the World in 12 Books

around-the-world-2014In browsing the wonderful world of book blogs, I came across an interesting challenge offered by Giraffe Days for 2014. As the title of the challenge, Around the World in 12 Books, suggests, you are encouraged to read 12 books from different countries in one year. However, for 2014, the challenge has been modified to offer different levels. Originally, I wanted to go for the Casual Tourist level, but I have since upped it to Seasoned Traveler. So I will read 12 books; one of the books has to be set in Africa, one in Asia, one in Europe, one in Australia+New Zealand, one in North America, and one in South America. The Middle East is a bonus. I have enough books on my book shelves to easily fulfill this requirement.

Here is my selection:

  1. Dominican Republic: In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
  2. Mexico: The Old Gringo by Carlos Fuentes
  3. United States: Caleb’s Crossing by Geraldine Brooks
  4. Canada: Annabel by Kathleen Winter
  5. Germany: The Undertaking by Audrey Magee
  6. France: The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure
  7. Bosnia: The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway
  8. Kenya: Adé: A Love Story by Rebecca Walker
  9. Nigeria: Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
  10. Japan: A Pale View of Hills by Kazuo Ishiguro
  11. Russia: The Siege by Helen Dunmore
  12. Australia: The Spare Room by Helen Garner

  1. I’ve joined this challenge too and combined it with a TBR pile challenge.
Your Aust book is not one I’m familiar with?

    Good luck 🙂
